After Ruben Amorim was let go earlier this month, Darren Fletcher and Carrick have temporarily taken charge of the first-team responsibilities, but a permanent solution is required soon. This situation could prompt the Red Devils to target the Italian manager, with Jacobs stating that they are 'serious' about their pursuit.
Jacobs: Man Utd 'Serious' in Roberto De Zerbi Chase
In a discussion with The United Stand, journalist Ben Jacobs from GIVEMESPORT revealed that any speculations linking De Zerbi to a potential move to Old Trafford hold validity.
This suggests that United might be 'very serious' in their quest to secure the current Marseille coach as their next manager. Jacobs noted, "I have been alerted that the links to Roberto De Zerbi are indeed true.
Manchester United is planning to be very committed to him." Previously, United had shown interest in other emerging managers for this position, aiming at Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag; however, those hires did not ultimately fulfill expectations.
Bringing in De Zerbi would at least offer the club a manager with Premier League expertise and a history of achieving European qualifications with an English club. The interest in acquiring De Zerbi seems reasonable.
He notched 14 wins in 32 games while coaching Brighton in the 2022-23 season, which helped the team secure a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, earning him the title of 'one of the best managers in the world' from Arne Slot.
However, his following season was less stable, with only 12 wins out of 38 matches and an 11th-place finish in the league. Numerous issues affected his second year, such as the departure of key players Robert Sanchez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Moises Caicedo during the summer, along with Leandro Trossard being sold to Arsenal just months after arriving.
Additionally, first-team midfielder Enock Mwepu was forced to retire early in his career due to a heart condition, placing De Zerbi in a challenging situation.
If United desires De Zerbi to succeed as their manager, they must commit to supporting him with player acquisitions, but considering their previous managers were provided with significant budgets, this expectation should not be unrealistic for the Italian, who has guided Marseille to notable achievements over the past 18 months, culminating in a second-place finish in Ligue 1.
