As stated by Record (page 25), Manchester United has a significant chance to acquire Al-Hilal's midfielder Ruben Neves since Real Madrid is no longer interested in securing his services.
The Red Devils are eager to strengthen their midfield this winter, and Neves has been identified as a primary objective. The club has gained an advantage with Madrid stepping away from their interest.
There were expectations that Los Blancos might attempt to sign the Portuguese midfielder during the winter transfer window, but president Florentino Perez has opted against any mid-season signings due to the absence of a permanent manager.
Neves' deal is set to expire at the end of the season, but Madrid intends to avoid any transfer fees.
This situation has placed United in a favorable position, as they are prepared to offer £17 million for the 28-year-old player.
Neves proved to be one of the standout defensive midfielders while playing at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
At one point in 2023, he was linked with a move to the Red Devils, but ultimately signed with Al-Hilal for a fee of £47 million.
Al-Hilal is currently evaluating Neves’ situation and might consider selling him this winter if he does not agree to a new contract. A late transfer before the deadline could occur if they cannot persuade him to accept new terms. the Red Devi has demonstrated interest in Neves, and it would not be surprising if they make an official approach soon.
For the Mancunian giants, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are the primary defensive midfield options; however, Ugarte has faced challenges securing playing time and has shown inconsistency throughout the current season.
His positioning has been criticized in multiple matches. Casemiro, who is set to depart from United this summer, has delivered several impressive performances in the number 6 position, but at 33, he is past his prime and lacks the stamina to last the full 90 minutes.
Manchester United requires more quality and depth to aspire for Champions League qualification either by finishing in the top four or the top five of the league. Acquiring Neves would be an excellent move for the Red Devils. His adjustment would be smooth, having spent several seasons in the Premier League with Wolves.
He is capable of playing in either a defensive or central midfield position. His strong defensive skills, coupled with his creative abilities, would make him an ideal addition to United's squad. Even with his contract ending this summer, he would be a valuable acquisition at a price of £17 million.
